Tektite Records presents The Young Mothers, a sampler with tracks from each member of the group.

A listening session of – or even a discussion about – real-deal improvised music isn’t complete until Texas is stirred into the mix. The Young Mothers, a supercharged, American Southwest-dominate collection of creative musicians that formed in Houston, features a group of established improvisers who came together when bandleader Ingebrigt Håker Flaten moved to the Lone Star State in 2009.

In Texas, the Norwegian-born bassist, who travels more than 250 days per year to play concerts all over the planet, discovered a ridiculously diverse pool of improvisers. “A band like The Young Mothers could only happen because of Texas’ long tradition as a melting pot of freedoms fighters and its cultural diversity,” says Flaten. “The world is for sure changing!”

Before The Young Mothers’ debut record takes flight in spring 2014, Tektite Records presents a sampling of creative contributions from the central time zone, ranging from belligerent grindcore and ancient/future hip-hop to jaunty improv and caged-animal-unleashed free jazz from each TYM member: Flaten of Austin (The Thing), Jonathan Horne of Austin (Plutonium Farmers), Jawwaad Taylor of Houston (Bully Love), Stefan Gonzalez of Dallas (Orgullo Primitivo), Jason Jackson of Houston (Free Radicals), and Frank Rosaly of Chicago (Milkwork).

The sampler also includes a track from The Young Mothers’ forthcoming A Young Mothers Work is Never Done, scheduled to drop in LP, CD, and digital form in March 2014.

Ingebrigt Håker Flaten Austin, Texas

Ingebrigt has established himself as one of the strongest voices on bass in jazz and improvised music on the international circuit today. His work with his own projects, as well as with The Thing, Atomic, Free Fall, Scorch, and in duo formats with Joe McPhee, Evan Parker and Håkon Kornstad have put him at the center of a large pool of improvisers with strikingly different modes of operation. ... more
