about

‘Locations’ – a first-and-only-time recording collaboration between bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and multi-instrumentalist Steve Jansen – is nearly a decade in the making.

Recorded during an imminent Blue Norther in the Texas Hill County in 2012, the two then Texas-based sound sculptors gathered at a wooded backyard studio and committed some ideas directly to quarter-inch reel-to-reel tape. Then the tapes were “lost.”

Four years later, the recordings emerged but were then back burner’d for another three years or so. The pause in the world allowed the record to jump to the front of consciousness for Ingebrigt, who now lives in Trondheim, Norway, and Steve Jansen (not Steve Jansen from Japan, not Japan the country), who’s based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The 10-track album features 34 minutes of jazz elements spiraling around and into abstract slugs, drone tones acquiescing with shred guitar, and horror-movie-music-in-the forest didactics.

His work with his own projects, as well as with The Thing, Atomic, Free Fall, Scorch, and in duo formats with Joe McPhee, Evan Parker and Håkon Kornstad have put him at the center of a large pool of improvisers with strikingly different modes of operation. ... more
